OCC is a scientific organization dedicated to enhancing interactions and providing meetings and discussion forums worldwide to those interested in free radicals in biological systems, oxidants and antioxidants in biology and medicine, micronutrients, nutrition and health.
In this web site are listed the current officers of the OCC, a brief history, a complete list of upcoming meetings organized or co-sponsored by the OCC as well as a comprehensive list of other scientific meetings of interest to those in our field. Also included is a collection of downloadable abstracts in PDF format (some in HTML) from our past meetings.
Finally, there is an up-to-date compendium of links to other websites that could be useful to your research or professional interest.
We encourage current and prospective OCC members to provide announcements of meetings, journals, websites, or other information to publish on our site.
Letter from Chandan K. Sen, the new OCC President
Dear Members, friends of the OCC and researchers in the field of redox biology:
It is my distinct honor and pleasure to assume responsibility of the President of the Oxygen Club of California (OCC). OCC is a California-based international organization with a history of activity in many countries around the World . Several OCC co-sponsored meetings will take place in different places around the world during 2008 and 2009.
The birth of OCC in 1994 at Berkeley was somewhat co-incident with my moving to Berkeley as a postdoctoral fellow. I have immensely benefited from OCC as a researcher in the field of oxygen, redox and antioxidant biology. It is indeed a wonderful opportunity to give back to this unique organization which has helped the career development of numerous junior scientists, helped senior scientists network and facilitated the growth of redox-based research worldwide. During the last 14 years, OCC has sponsored a number of conferences in more than 20 countries worldwide.
Extraordinary leadership of the past and strong (academic) community support has made this possible. I want to thank Professor Lester Packer, Founder and Honorary President , for developing OCC into what it is today. I’d like to express my sincere thanks to our immediate past president Professor Helmut Sies, for his strong leadership in the immediate past.
During the last 10 years, the field of oxygen, redox and antioxidant biology has witnessed major advances and it seems that the time is now ripe to focus on building translational research with the aim to take discoveries to impact people’s lives. I am pleased to announce that the current OCC leadership has decided to develop OCC as the first and currently only scientific organization dedicated to build translational research in the field of oxygen, redox and antioxidant biology. Relevant issues such as clinical biomarkers, pre-clinical disease models, imaging, nutraceuticals, systems biology, community outreach and intervention, and supporting students to develop a translational research career in redox biology would be in focus. The 2010 annual conference in Santa Barbara will focus on Translational Research. The meeting will be co-hosted by myself, Professor Junji Yodoi (Kyoto) and Professor Dipak Das (Connecticut). Prof. Yodoi also joins us as the vice-president for scientific affairs. Please join me in welcoming him.
I warmly welcome you to take part in OCC activities world-wide. Please let us have your thoughts about how we could better serve our community. Young scientists represent the core building blocks of OCC. Welcome!
Chandan K. Sen
President, OCC
