3rd ISNA and 2nd SFRR Asia report

Report on 3rd ISNA, the Third International Symposium on Natural Antioxidants, and 2nd SFRR Asia, Meeting of the Society for Free Radical Research Asia.

Shanghai, June 24-29, 2005

An International symposium on Natural antioxidants (ISNA) was held on June 24-29, 2005 in Shanghai under the auspices of the Committee on Free Radical Biology and medicine, the Chinese Biophysical Society. The meeting was co-sponsored by UNESCO-MCBN, Society for Free Radical Research-Asia (SFRR-Asia), National Natural Science Foundation of China, Institute of Biophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Oxygen Club of California (OCC) and several companies from China and overseas countries.

The Second meeting of the Society for Free Radical Research Asia and Third International Symposium on Natural Antioxidant was a great success. The main theme of the symposium was micronutrients and natural antioxidants. The meeting attracted more than 200 participants from more than 20 countries, including Japan, Korea, India, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan China, Hong Kong China, USA, Turkey, Germany, and Italy, and many from mainland China. More than 40 renowned scientific researchers in free radical biology and medicine attended.

In attendance were Professors Toshikazu Yoshikawa and Enrique Cadenas, President and President-Elect respectively of the Society for Free Radical Research International, as well as former president Professor Lester Packer. These persons were invited to deliver their research findings and share their research experiences.

Moreover, 20 young investigators made oral presentations. In addition, a total of 86 entrants for the best poster contest were recruited. The panel of judges was composed of young scientists. The first authors of the final five award-winning posters were given a special prize of 200 USD (sponsored by the Society of Free Radical Research Asia). The poster presentation in this symposium attracted a large crowd of graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and others. These sessions were praised by our distinguished guests as being the highlight of this symposium.

After the meeting, attendees went sightseeing in Shanghai, toured the Yangtze River, and visited other parts of the country.

During the meeting, the Society of Free Radical Research (SFRR-Asia) Asia held a business Meeting. Professor Baolu Zhao from China was elected as President of SFRR-Asia, Professor TPA Devasagayam from India was chosen as president-elect of SFRR-Asia, and Professor Yuji Naito from Japan was elected to continue as Secretary-General of SFRR-Asia. It was decided that the next SFRR-Asia Meeting will be held in India in 2007. The Society of Free Radical Research-Thailand has been received as new member of SFRR-Asia. The representatives of the Society of Free Radical Research-Indonesia also attended the business meeting.

During the meeting The Societies of Free Radical Biology and Medicine from mainland China and Taiwan communicated and discussed the second conference of Free Radical Biology and medicine between the two sides of the straits to be convened in Taiwan in 2006.

Professor Lester Packer was honored by the Committee of Free Radical Biology and Medicine and the Chinese Biophysical Society during the opening ceremony because his contribution to the world-wide study of natural antioxidants and for promoting free radical research in China. During the closing ceremony Professor Baolu Zhao received an award as a Life Time Honorary member of the Oxygen Club of California (OCC) honoring his contribution to free radical biology and medicine.
